Cai Beo Fishing Village

Known as the largest and oldest floating fishing village in the area, Cai Beo Fishing Village offers visitors a rare glimpse into the traditional maritime lifestyle of local fishermen. Rich in history and surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, this village provides an authentic cultural experience away from the usual tourist trails.

Whereas the Vietnamese government has passed a directive compelling residents of similar fishing villages in Halong Bay to move onto land due to a variety of factors (namely the lack of healthcare and education in the sea), Ben Beo is still teeming with life today, as children here are able to take a water taxi to and from their school on nearby Cat Ba Island.

Overview of Cai Beo floating fishing village

Cai Beo Fishing Village is located just about 1.5 kilometers southeast of Cat Ba town center. The easiest way to get there is by boat, with a short 5-minute ride from Beo Port.

This is not only the largest but also one of the oldest floating villages in Cat Ba, with a rich history that dates back thousands of years. This fascinating community on water is home to approximately 300 families who earn their livelihoods through fishing and aquaculture, as they have done for centuries. While some live on actual fishing boats, most households are essentially small, one-bedroom houses built on wooden rafts.

Unlike the more tourist-heavy areas of Cat Ba, Cai Beo retains an authentic charm. Colorful floating houses and fish farms dot the calm, emerald waters, creating a peaceful and picturesque scene that feels like stepping back in time.

Discover the hidden treasure of Ben Beo exclusively on Cat Ba Ocean Cruises 3-Day/2-Night journey along with other distinct adventures in the remote Lan Ha Bay, such as island cycling or a stress-free, slow-paced mid-afternoon swimming or lagoon kayaking.

Historical and Archaeological Values of Cai Beo

Beyond its natural beauty, Cai Beo Fishing Village is a site of great historical and archaeological importance. It is considered one of the most significant prehistoric sites in the Cat Ba region, with evidence of human habitation dating back between 4,000 and 6,000 years.

The name “Cai Beo”, meaning “big bay”, reflects its natural suitability for early settlement by ancient Vietnamese communities. Archaeological excavations have uncovered two ancient kitchen sites, 137 stone tools, 1,424 ceramic shards, and 568 animal bones, revealing a culture centered around fishing and shellfish gathering.

During the Vietnam War, the area was bombed by U.S. forces, but the village remained resilient. In 1972, archaeologists discovered additional relics, including ancient fishing nets and stone tools.

Today, Cai Beo is home to around 300 fishing families who live on floating houses and maintain a traditional way of life, now supported by electricity from the mainland. With an average water depth of about 4 meters (13 feet), the village is ideal for aquaculture and remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Most day and overnight cruises pass by without stopping, allowing Cai Beo to preserve its authentic, peaceful charm as a living museum of Vietnam’s maritime heritage.

One of the best ways to experience Cai Beo Fishing Village is by fully immersing yourself in its peaceful, authentic atmosphere. Our small boats tour through the village to explore its hidden corners, passing by floating fish farms, colorful houseboats, and even floating restaurants.

Many local families are happy to welcome visitors, allowing you to interact with fishermen, learn about their daily routines, and get a deeper understanding of life on the sea. When visiting a floating household, it is customary to offer a small gift of around VND 100,000 (about USD 4) as a token of appreciation for their hospitality. This quiet, community-centered exploration is one of the most rewarding activities in Cai Beo, offering insight into a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

Cai Beo Fishing Village is a must-visit destination when exploring Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha Bay. It offers not only rich cultural and historical value but also a unique experience of a traditional fisherman’s life amid peaceful, beautiful coastal scenery. Plan your trip to Cai Beo and immerse yourself in the distinctive lifestyle of this remarkable floating fishing village in the heart of the sea!
